The Tongkat Ali-plant is scientifically known as Eurycoma longifolia Jack, a flowering plant in the Simaroubaceae family with the genus name Eurycoma, Tongkat Ali is a native plant found over South East Asia across from Myanmar down to Indonesia, including Thailand, Indochina, malaysia and the Borneo islands.

In Malaysia, it is commonly found along the hilly slopes in the primary and secondary forests. It is a small slender tree that can reach the height of 12m and is usually stem less. The leaves are arranged like the shape off an umbrella.

In Malaysia, Tongkat Ali is also called by the several local names such as "Penawar pahit", "Pasak Bumi", "Tongkat Baginda" and "Petala Bumi", The local tribes in this region use other names such as "Akar jangat", "Juak" and "Jelas".

In Indonesia, this plant is called "babi kurus" in Java, "Tungke" in sumatera and "Mampoleh" in Banca; while in Thailand is known as "Piak" Tung saw.

Traditional Uses
Tongkat Ali has long been used by the indigenous population of South East Asia as traditional medicine, the decoction of the root is used to cure many common ailments, ranging from cut and wound, gastro-intestinal infections, gum disease and coughs, to arthritis, backache, yellow fever and malaria.
Most importantly, Tongkat Ali is highly valued for its aphrodisiac properties and to increase stamina, energy and vitality in men.
In Indonesia, the decoction is used for sexual connotation (penile firmness and strength) and for physical and muscular relief from a hard day's work in the field.
In Cambodia, the root is used as an antidote for poisons. This plant is so widely used for the treatment of many diseases and illness. In Vietnam, it is commonly known as "cay ba binh" which means "the plant that cures hundreds of diseases"
